Preparing the PedFACTS Course

Advance preparation is one of the keys to conducting an effective PedFACTS Course. The following provides the information you need for advance planning.

Course Planning Checklist

Planning for a PedFACTS Course should start well before the day of the course. Allow a month or two to make the arrangements. During the week before the course you should confirm the space, equipment, and materials required for the course. Here are suggested steps to take in planning a PedFACTS Course.

Prior to the Course

• Identify appropriate individuals to serve as faculty (if needed).
  
• Select the course dates.
  
• Reserve the location for the course and check the lighting, power supply, and any potential noise problems.
  
• Develop a budget for the course and set any registration fee as needed.
  
• Develop a plan for promoting the course (if appropriate).
  
• Order textbooks and other required materials from either the American Academy of Pediatrics (866-843-2271) or Jones and Bartlett Publishers (800-832-0034).
  
• Order/prepare/check any needed course supplies and equipment.
  
• Reserve the necessary electronic equipment (DVD player, overhead projector, etc.).
  
• Make necessary photocopies.
  

Day of the Course

• Set up the registration are.
  
• Ensure the room set-up is appropriate for the course.
  
• Set up the VCR or DVD player and TV or computer and projector.
  
• Set up the small group activity rotations including:
     - First Aid for a Blocked Airway and Rescue Breathing Skill Station (manikins, face shields, sanitizing supplies, paper towels, and photocopies of Appendix B).
     - Writing Emergency Care Plans for Children with Special Needs (flip chart with stand, flip chart instructions, and photocopies of Appendix C).
     - Check Your Knowledge (flip chart with stand, flip chart instructions, and photocopies of Appendix D).
  

After the Course

• Submit the completed course roster to the AAP at PedFACTS Instructors Only.
  
• Submit evaluation forms to the AAP.
